 | | •On the Field of Battle•
The Battle of Gettysburg is considered to be the beginning of the end of the Confederacy. General Robert E. Lee's incursion into Maryland and Pennsylvania (with a planned turn toward Baltimore or Washington) was designed to frighten the North and force the Union into negotiations to end the Civil War. From July 1st through 3rd a fierce battle raged in the hills and valleys surrounding this small village. Ironically, on the afternoon of July 4th, 1863, Lee's Army of Northern Virginia began its hasty retreat back to the relative safety of Virginia.
More than 51,000 were killed or wounded during those three hellish days. Lee's exhausted and depleted forces never fully recovered from Gettysburg, even though they continued to fight for almost two more years.
This map was created by one of the finest lithographers of the 19th century, Juliue Bien, for the Congressionally mandated "Official Records of the Union & Confederate Armies" (originals of this map are becoming very difficult to acquire). It was taken from a detailed sketch done by Jed Hotchkiss to accompany General R.S. Ewell's report to General Lee. The detail is extraordinary, with individual homes and their owners noted. Troop and artillery positions and their movements are shown.

IMPORTANT NOTE: Unframed pieces are printed on 100% rag, fine art paper. Framed pieces are printed on canvas.
All sizes are approximate. Because they are taken from authentic antiques, very few pieces are exact "standard sizes" and will, generally, require custom framing (which we offer at very reasonable prices - see below).
Due to the INCREDIBLY high shipping prices charged for OVERSIZE shipping, shipping charges may be higher than quoted for items that measure more than a total of 70" (matted height + width). For example a matted piece measuring 32" x 40" would be considered OVERSIZE (72"). For complete delivery information, see Information page.
