This map was created during a period when there were few new geographic discoveries. It shows the world as it was known in the late 17th century. It was made the Dutch cartographer, Johannes de Ram.
The map is surrounded by stunning engravings of mythological characters by engraver, Jacob Harrewyn. In the original map (from which this was taken), all of the images were meticulously painted by hand. An authentic copy of this map is extremely rare and incredibly valuable. There are few who would ever be able to afford such a map.
When most people first imagine an antique map, it is one like this that springs to mind. Designed to be more decorative than utilitarian, world maps, like this, are a popular part of many classical decorating schemes.
