 | | • Slave Pen Turned Prison •
From 1828 until 1861 this building (at 1352 Duke Street) was the center of the slave trade in Alexandria, Virginia. From 1858 until 1861 it was operated under the name Price, Birch, and Co. until it was captured by Union troops and converted into a Civil War prison. behind the two whitewashed brick walls were two slave "yards." The yard on the west held male slaves, while the eastern yard contained females and children. The two were separated by a strong iron door. The front building housed offices and holding "pens" or cells.
This amazing photograph shows the former home of this appalling activity with Union troops standing before it (some of whom were black soldiers). It was taken by a photographer from the Brady studio. The photograph you see was painstakingly digitally corrected and enhanced to provide an almost perfect image of this historic scene.
