Nathaniel Currier and James Merritt Ives formed the American printmaking duo commonly known as Currier and Ives in New York City. Noticing the lack of photographs and with public interest, Currier began producing prints, his first being "Ruins of the Planter's Hotel, New Orleans".
It was in 1852 that Currier hired his famous partner, James Ives, to be his accountant. Hugely popular from 1835 - 1907, Currier & Ives produced more than a million prints by hand-colored lithography. Colors were typically applied by an assembly line of artists, each of whom added a single color to the print.
Most of the prints depicted images of American life throughout the seasons, horse racing, portraits of people & ships, and images from the Civil War. After Currier's death in 1888, Ives remained active in the firm until his death in 1895. Due to improvements in the printing & photoengraving process, the demand for lithographs gradually diminished. Currier & Ives officially closed in 1907.
