 | | •California Gold Rush Map•
When this map was made, California was in the midst of incredibly rapid change. The state had been won from Mexico in early 1848. Later in 1848, gold was discovered near Sacramento and a huge mass migration began that brought tens of thousands of fortune hunters to the new U.S. territory. By 1849, 1,000 people per day were arriving in San Francisco, heading for the "Gold Country." This huge influx of population and the wealth flowing back out of the mountains, led to the rapid creation of the the new State of California in 1850.
This bright, hand-painted map was created in California just a few month after statehood and was used by many who were traveling to or considering a trip to this new state at the far reaches of the continent. Counties, towns, settlements, roads, and geographic features (known to the mapmaker) as shown in great detail. This is an amazing and striking look back at the earliest days of this new state.

IMPORTANT NOTE: Unframed pieces are printed on 100% rag, fine art paper. Framed pieces are printed on canvas.
All sizes are approximate. Because they are taken from authentic antiques, very few pieces are exact "standard sizes" and will, generally, require custom framing (which we offer at very reasonable prices - see below).
Due to the INCREDIBLY high shipping prices charged for OVERSIZE shipping, shipping charges may be higher than quoted for items that measure more than a total of 70" (matted height + width). For example a matted piece measuring 32" x 40" would be considered OVERSIZE (72"). For complete delivery information, see Information page.
