 | | •Molasses, Rum, Slaves, & Pirates•
In 1841, the West Indies were still a vast European colonial empire. Only Haiti (Hayti on the map) was an independent nation (having gained indepence from France in 1804). The rest of the Caribbean was divided between the nations of Great Britain, France, Spain, Holland, Denmark, and Sweden (the islands controlled by each nation are listed on the map). The rum and slave trades were major businesses in the region in the mid-19th century. Pirates still plundering ships and villages among the Caribbean islands, when this map was made.
This brilliantly hand-painted map shows most of the islands that make up the West Indies. Cities, towns, and the larger islands geography are shown.
This stunning hand-painted map was map by S.A. Mitchell and features a green border. The map shows most of the islands that make up the West Indies. Cities, towns, and the larger islands geography are shown. West Indies maps are very popular, as so many Americans have spent memorable moments in the Caribbean.

IMPORTANT NOTE: Unframed pieces are printed on 100% rag, fine art paper. Framed pieces are printed on canvas.
All sizes are approximate. Because they are taken from authentic antiques, very few pieces are exact "standard sizes" and will, generally, require custom framing (which we offer at very reasonable prices - see below).
Due to the INCREDIBLY high shipping prices charged for OVERSIZE shipping, shipping charges may be higher than quoted for items that measure more than a total of 70" (matted height + width). For example a matted piece measuring 32" x 40" would be considered OVERSIZE (72"). For complete delivery information, see Information page.
PastView™ Gallery antique map, print, & photo replicas are scanned or photographed at the highest resolution on fine-art reproduction equipment.
